Project Details & Results

The project aims to rehabilitate waterlogged agricultural lands of Lernantsk community of Lori region. The project envisages constructing a 2000-meter long open drainage system and hydro-insulating a 2500-meter long earth irrigation canal to ensure draining of the affected farmlands, while using the collected water for irrigation. As a result of the project implementation more than 70ha of waterlogged farmlands will be rehabilitated and sustainably used. Moreover, about 120 community households will get stable income (in average extra US$1450 per households annually) through cultivation of potato and other crops. Furthermore, about 280 households of the community will have access to additional irrigation water as a result of the undertaken hydro-technical measures.

Special trainings on environmental awareness raising for Lernantsk and neighboring communities as well as local NGOs are planned. The population will gain knowledge on global environmental issues and local authorities will strengthen capacities on sustainable land and water management.

Project Results

The project will produce the following results:

Construct a 2000-meter long open drainage system to rehabilitate 70 ha farmlands;

Rehabilitate (hydro-insulate) a 2500-meter long irrigation canal to ensure provision of additional 18 l/s water and expand irrigated farmlands by 110 ha;

Ensure additional income for about 280 households of the community (US$1,000-1,200 average annual income per household, depending on cultivated crops);

Raise public awareness on global environmental issues and enhance capacities of local authorities on sustainable land and water management;

Produce a short documentary and other knowledge materials for dissemination of the project results and lessons learned.
