Supporting the promotion of Green Economy and constructive public dialogue in Armenia

Project Description

The project aims at supporting the development of a strategy document on introduction of green transformation policy of Armenia’s economy. It will demonstrate how green and nature-based solutions may enable strengthening competitiveness and resilience of the country’s economy simultaneously decreasing pressure on ecosystems, reducing pollution as well as encouraging social cohesion and creating social benefits. 

 The “Green Economy” is relatively new economy direction highlighting the necessity to minimize the negative impact on the environment generated by human economic activity. It is focused on ensuring sustainable development with minimal risks on environment at the same time stressing the importance of human capital development in social, educational, health and other aspects. 

For a country like Armenia having a rich biodiversity and vulnerable ecosystems, transition to green economy is an urgent necessity, also considering small economy, restricted development resources, as well as decreasing human resources. 

Within the framework of the project it is envisaged to: 

- support the process of policy formulation in transition to green economy in Armenia through consolidating respective expertise and efforts; 

- create a stakeholder dialogue platform for raising public awareness level and providing thorough information on the process, green economy transition policy and opportunities for comprehensive discussions over state programs, formulation of the agenda on Green Economy transformation and its implementation tools and mechanisms, as well as promoting effective public participation and dialogue. 

It is necessary to have both political will and perseverance, as well as a wide network of expertise potential and capacities combined with effective stakeholder engagement in order to reach Armenia’s Green Economy transformation and transition to the new system of economic relationship. 

The project plans to build “green dialogue platform” as a mechanism for stakeholder awareness and engagement. It has an objective to encourage creative approach while generating innovative development ideas and using world knowledge on green economy through presenting green economy principles, promoting wide participation of the expert community and the public. 

The green platform will serve as an extensive public forum for exchanging political and technical deliberations, consultations and opinions, the activity of which will be directed towards comprehensively informing stakeholders and encouraging participation in the concept document development processes in relation to expected transition to green economy.

Project Results

It is expected to achieve the following results:

• The draft ‘Green Economy Strategy in Armenia’ is developed, discussed by the stakeholders, finalized and submitted to the Government;
• National public dialogue platform on promotion of green economy in Armenia is created, which facilitates deliberation and cooperation among state institutions and all the stakeholders;
• State, regional, community, business, educational institutions and CSO representatives enhanced their capacitities in the field of green economy transition and sustainable development; information materials on green economy are developed in Armenian.
